Zuckermann . Un DJ Berlines por China

Un DJ Berlines por China / A Berlin DJ's Trip to China
(Octubre 2009 / October 2009)

Shangai is horizontal

Start of a 2 1/2 week tour in China, 6 gigs lie ahead of me. But first: no direct flight form the German Techno capital to Hong Kong (only to Beijing so far) - that boosts the total travel time to over 15 hours (as opposed to the total flight time of 10:40). Unfortunaltely my first gig is on the very night I arrive - so I prepare for the inevitable jetlag by drinking far too much before, during and after my gig at Play Club, Hong Kong. DJ Leman, my very nice host that night, is helping with a lot of… Caipirinhas (getting pissed on Brazil's national drink in Hong Kong seems sooo international - my headache afterwards tells me to fuck internationalism). Apart from that, the local club scene seems to be about show-off night clubs with VIP booths, a bottle of Vodka on the table, and some models around you, rather than about the music - the (in)famous triple C mix: caviar, champagne, and Concorde (vulgo: coke) rule. Nevertheless and although I don't play by the rules and spin no cheap progressive House stuff people are used to here, the crowd is wild and willing to dance. It will be my best gig in China…

Hangzhou rooooocking House Set

Other than that, Hong Kong is relaxed, rich, and you don't really need Chinese language skills to get by. Many women are clad in Chanel style dresses, Bentley's are abundant, the famous harbour hits you over the head with it's logo charged skyline, yet some areas are still veeery Chinese. All in all, it's a mature and refined version of what I will see in China, Mainland.

Hong Kong Ferry

Shanghai is, where the real culture shock appears. After a night in a veeery socialist looking train compartment all by myself (although it's for two people), I arrive at Shanghai main station, only to face the first rip-off in China. A taxi driver wants 10€ for a 3€ trip (I trade him down to 6€ with hand and feet - in Shanghai, English won't help you with the cabbies). Then he releases me at a wrong address, well, even 10 of Shanghai cab drivers together won't equal 1 London cabbie. Other than that, Shanghai's landmarks are really impressive at first, then you realize that this new glitz side of the river (Pudong) is pretty much dead, and you'll never go there again, since the "real" life plays itself out on the Puxi side of things (the other, western side of the river). Particularly the "French Concession" is beautiful and offers everything you might be interested in: chinese hole-in-the-wall-operations of all kinds (repair shops, restaurants, massage parlours), expensive expat restaurants, quite, nice plane tree lined 1930ies appartment buildings, very hip shopping streets, and also the inevitable shopping malls, small 24 hours corner supermarkets, and tons of "legal" DVD shops with even more tons of illegally copied movies.

Rocking Play Club Hong Kong

On the other hand, you have a non-democratic state's restrictions, like: lots of websites are blocked, lots of people don't talk about politics but rather consume like mad men, and police can be seen everywhere on the streets. Another restriction, people don't understand electronic music over there (yet)! There are very few places for "underground" music (were i partly played at), like lOgO bar, dada bar, shelter above all. They are managed by expats though, Brits, French, and Americans… that says a lot. A Chinese producer for which i made a remix a couple of month ago, B6, is considered the only original, Chinese, creative electronic artist in shanghai (20 mio. inhabitants)… that also says a lot. The country is still in a state of trying to catch up with the West, mostly in terms of consumist power, that is. And also in terms of bad taste Pop music and R 'n B. That is also the case for Hangzhou, were I also played. Marketed as China's "No. 1 Tourist Destination" and a province capital of "only" 6 mio, inhabitants, it indeed has a very beautiful lake and setting, but it also sports cheesy cantonese Pop, and people staring at Westerners like they were aliens. House music was also alien to them, in spite of CC (the promoter) hard efforts to present some quality music in the city. To my very surprise, people actually loved my set, and after 3 tracks the formerly empty dancefloor was full, and more or less stayed that way until I stopped. There is hope…

Dim Sum

A last word about the food: it was partly appalling at first (as is Shanghai the city, when you first get there), but than i started to love it (as i did with the city). It's mostly very spicy, and also very, very interesting (the way you eat together, the taste…). And no, i didn't eat dog (as far as I know…), nor cat, nor monkey brain…
When I was on my 13 hours flight back to Zurich (stopover to Berlin), I had a hard time imagening that no chaotic traffic, and only western faces would await me when arriving at the boring Swiss capital. At least Berlin showed some attitude with a decent traffic jam, a nice but down-to-earth Turkish taxi driver, and all the fucked up bars in the area I live in.
Glad and sad to be home again.
